I was asked in one of the posts how I did it, so I decided to write a post about this topic because it is important.
As I always say (and write), language is first and foremost a cultural element.
You need to know the language for social, professional, and certainly cultural integration.
How did I learn
When I realized that I would move to Belgium, I looked for intensive French lessons. Every time I came to Belgium, I went to school to learn the language.
French in French. We were not spoken to in any other language. I broke my teeth and learned. I learned the language, and the vocabulary each day for the next day.
Lessons also allowed social integration: I met people who shared the same challenges and wished to meet other people.
As soon as I knew French at a level of small communication - I used it... Yes, there were many awkward moments of using words in the wrong context, like for example when I told my students to take off the tights instead of the stickers collants et autocollants (sounds the same to me...).
I realized that when I actively used the language, I could improve it. Learn more words, improve grammar.
Don't be afraid to talk to people. You will be surprised how nice they are and how much they want to help (at least that is my experience).
In Flemish I did the same.
Talk, talk, talk. Don't be ashamed
When I coach or give lectures in French, I make sure to mention that French is not my mother tongue. It takes a lot of pressure off, and the audience shows understanding. And if I get stuck on a word, they will help me.
